Makati Medical Center Successfully Performs First Image-Guided Surgical Navigation for Orbital Surgery

January 22, 2025

Makati Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of its first image-guided surgical navigation (ISN) procedure for orbital surgery. The procedure was performed on a 37-year-old male patient presenting with right eye proptosis by orbit and oculoplasty consultant Dr. Ma. Donna D. Santiago.

The patient underwent an en bloc excision of a retro-orbital mass through a lateral orbitotomy with a beveled bone flap, utilizing the Brainlab image-guided orbital navigation system. The procedure was completed successfully, and the final diagnosis confirmed a cavernous hemangioma. Dr. Santiago was assisted by Dr. Patricia Riego de Dios, Dr. Hezekiah Mikhail Vicente Q. Malubay, and anesthesiologist Dr. Benjamin Abela III.

Benefits of Image-Guided Surgical Navigation
Image-guided surgical navigation (ISN) provides three-dimensional localization of surgical instruments, enhancing preoperative planning and reducing operative complications. While not yet the standard of care, ISN offers significant advantages in orbital surgeries by improving precision and minimizing risks.
